Overview
If writing isn't your forte or you're venturing into the unknown, this club can help you develop your writing skills for a conference paper or a journal article.

The adage "publish or perish" holds true to those involved in research and is still relevant today. This is also true for doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows who are looking to publish conference papers or journal articles based on their research.

Dissemination of findings and contribution to the corpus of knowledge necessarily involves that any researcher writes up their work in relevant publications such as conference contributions, book chapters, and referred journals.

Whether English is your first, second, or third language, there are nuances that need to be addressed for academic writing. Conference papers and journal articles require a different approach to a thesis, which adds to the difficulty for authors. There are times when a constructive feedback environment is required to advance a conference paper or journal article.

During the club sessions, small sections of papers offered up will be critiqued for group learning, followed by writing exercises that aim to develop writing skills further towards publishing or focused writing sessions.

Club Objectives

In this club, we will provide a collaborative environment to:

1. Meet and focus on conference papers and journal articles, holding yourself to account for managing your progress.

2. Discuss small sections of papers offered up for critique and group learning.

3. Undertake writing exercises that aim to develop writing skills further.

4. Practice presenting a conference paper for peer feedback.

5. Celebrate the wins as participants complete key milestones of submitting their conference paper or journal article…and acceptance for presentation or publication.

6. Understand the fundamentals of academic writing structure.

7. Understand what publishing entails, how it is accomplished, and when it is most appropriate to consider doing so.

8. Recognise the publication hierarchy and academic journal rankings.

9. Learn how to read journal requirements, standards, and fit for your research.

10. Understand predatory journal practices and how to avoid them.
