Welcome to the Sustainable Organisations and Societal Impact Research Group, which is dedicated to investigating the complexities of sustainability from both an organisational and societal perspectives, ultimately leading to more effective and inclusive solutions.

This group aims to become an invaluable resource for Doctor of Business Administration students and doctoral practitioners who are interested to drive sustainable business practices worldwide.

In today's quickly landscape, the capacity to successfully adopt sustainable business models is critical for organisational success and societal impact. The group's goal is, therefore, to empower its members with the knowledge and skills required to be leaders and leverage sustainability effectively in business practices by establishing an inclusive environment that enables members to participate in insightful discussions, exchange perspectives, and collaborate on ground-breaking research projects, thereby bridging the divide between theory and practice.

By bringing together both, scholars and practitioners, we hope to foster a vibrant flow of knowledge that not only strengthens academic rigour but also informs real-world applications and impact the future of business.

Within this research group we want to uncover the latest trends in sustainability, encompassing innovative approaches to resource management, waste reduction, responsible innovation, and sustainable business practices. As a research group we will further adopt a holistic approach to addressing sustainability challenges in various sectors through webinars, workshops, guest lectures, collaborative research projects, focused discussions, and networking events.

This research group is not only a forum for scholarly growth, but also a community where like-minded people may assist one another on their academic and professional paths.

We invite you to join us in exploring the dynamic challenges and opportunities that sustainability brings to the corporate world. Club Objectives

The objective of this research group is to establish a collaborative environment in which members can investigate and contribute to specific research lines that influence modern business practices. The following higher categories provide a structured framework for discussing and exploring the interconnected themes of sustainability, ensuring both organizational and societal perspectives are considered. Our group's focus areas include:

1. Sustainable Business Practices and Circular Economy: focusing on the integration of sustainability into core business strategies to promote resilience and long-term success. This category encompasses topics related to:

  • Sustainable Investing: Ensures that money supports sustainable activities by focussing on investing strategies that take environmental and social considerations into account, such as socially responsible investments(SRI), the issuance of green bonds, and the measurement of social return on investment(SROI).
  • Circular Design and Innovation: Developing novel product design methods to improve longevity, repairability, and recyclability, decreasing environmental impact and preserving resources.
  • Sustainable Business Models: Investigating how organisations might transition from linear to circular approaches, incorporating sustainability into fundamental strategies to improve resilience and longevity.
  • Resource Efficiency and Waste Management: Examining strategies for reducing waste through effective resource utilisation, recycling, and closed-loop systems.
  • Water Management: Exploring integrated resource management, urban water systems, water quality dynamics, hydrological modeling, climate change adaptation, innovative treatment technologies, the water-energy nexus, socioeconomic factors, ecological restoration, and data-driven decision support systems.
  • Quality Management & Excellence: Involves putting in place systems and processes that increase product quality and organisational performance while also including sustainable practices to attain excellence.
  • Responsible Innovation for Sustainable Enterprises: Promotes the creation of new products, services, and processes that are both innovative and responsible, thus integrating commercial aims with sustainability objectives
  • Sustainable Business Practices & Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR): Discusses strategies for incorporating sustainability into business operations, such as implementing CSR initiatives that align with the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs), implementing ethical business practices, promoting responsible leadership, developing green supply chains, and encouraging sustainable product development.
  • Supply Chain Management: Addresses the intricacies of supply chain management, with a focus on sustainability, efficiency, and environmental impact reduction.

2. Energy Solutions and Efficiency: addressing the vital role that energy plays in sustainability efforts and the need for organizations to adopt clean energy practices to reduce their environmental footprint and foster sustainable operations. This category encompasses topics related to:
  • Energy Efficiency: Focuses on strategies and technologies that reduce energy consumption while maintaining performance. Research in this area aims to identify best practices for organizations to implement energy-saving measures, enhancing overall operational efficiency and reducing carbon footprints.
  • Renewable Energy Sources: Explores the adoption and integration of renewable energy technologies such as solar, wind, and biomass. This topic investigates how organizations can transition to clean energy sources, thereby reducing dependency on fossil fuels and mitigating climate change impacts.
  • Smart Grids and Energy Storage: Studies the implementation of smart grid technologies that enhance energy efficiency and reliability, alongside innovations in energy storage solutions that facilitate the optimal use of renewable energy.

3. Social Equity and Community Engagement: focusing on the social dimensions of sustainability. It emphasizes the importance of equitable solutions, community involvement, and addressing social disparities in sustainability initiatives. This category encompasses topics related to:
  • Energy and Mobility Poverty: Addresses the dual challenges of energy access and sustainable transportation. This area of research examines the impacts of energy poverty on communities and explores solutions to improve access to affordable, reliable, and clean energy, as well as sustainable mobility options for marginalized populations.
  • Just Transition: This concept emphasizes the need to ensure that the shift toward a sustainable economy is equitable and inclusive. It focuses on providing support and opportunities for workers and communities affected by changes in the economy, particularly in regions reliant on fossil fuels. Organizations can adopt strategies to retrain workers and create new job opportunities in sustainable sectors.
  • Behavioural Change and Stakeholder Engagement: Investigating how organisations can encourage sustainable consumer behaviours and engage stakeholders in circular economy initiatives.
  • Community Engagement and Empowerment: Focusing on the role of local communities in sustainability initiatives helps ensure that solutions are culturally relevant and address the needs of the people. Organizations can benefit from actively involving communities in decision-making processes and sustainability projects, creating a sense of ownership and enhancing social impact.
  • Health and Well-being: Addressing the intersection of environmental sustainability and public health is crucial. Poor environmental conditions can significantly impact health outcomes, so organizations should consider how their operations affect community health, and incorporate health-centric policies in their sustainability efforts.
  • Technology for Social Good: Exploring how emerging technologies can be leveraged to address societal challenges can create innovative solutions. Focusing on the ethical implications of technology use, particularly in areas such as data privacy, automation, and AI, is vital for ensuring responsible innovation.
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI): Ensuring diverse perspectives in sustainability discussions is essential for comprehensive solutions. Governance, Reporting, and Resilience: highlighting the necessity for strong governance frameworks, transparent reporting on sustainability performance, and the creation of adaptive strategies that enable organizations to respond effectively to socio-economic challenges and environmental changes. This category encompasses topics related to:

  • Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Reporting: Entails creating detailed reports on a company's ESG operations in order to meet sustainability reporting standards and incorporate these findings into financial reporting and business strategy.

  • Climate Change Risk Management and Adaptation: This area focusses on detecting and managing climate change risks, as well as devising methods for organisations to adapt to changing environmental circumstances in order to maintain resilience and continuity.

By focussing on these essential areas, our group hopes to provide members with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively support their organizations to play a pivotal role in fostering sustainable development and social equity, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable future.
