Overview

Every doctoral student is assigned a supervisor(and often more than one) whose primary role and responsibility is to provide scientific guidance, assistance on a scientific level, on choices related to the state of the art, the research methodology, scientific review, or the thesis structure.

However, the emphasis here is on the GUIDANCE, while decisions on how to take the research further ultimately must be made by the student. And as frustrating and overwhelming as this may appear to the student, this is the role of a supervisor.

During this webinar, we will discuss both sides' expectations, as well as how to constructively work with supervisor(s) feedback, covering topics such as time to feedback, scope of feedback, and the differences between supervisor and mentor roles.

The webinar will take place at 1.00pm UK time and we look forward to a lively discussion.

To maximise the learning for participants, questions may be posted to the webinar discussion board after your registration. These will be addressed during the webinar.

Following the presentation of the webinar, the hosts will be available to answer any research-related questions you may have in an open door session with no agenda other than your own questions.

Prof. Dr. Steven McCabe

I’ve been an academic since 1987 when I started teaching economics. Among other subjects taught, I have lectured in business and management, strategy and research methods. As well as authoring articles, chapters and conference papers, I have published seven books, the most recent of which were Exploring the Green Economy and Green Manufacturing both publishedby by Bite-Sized Books, London in, respectively, July and October of 2021.

One of my main roles was as Associate Professor with resposnsibility as director of research degrees in business involving oversight of all doctoral programmes including the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA). I was also involved as a tutor for the online DBA programme for Liverpool Laureate and participated in the residency workshops for students undertaking research for their thesis.

Research, though at times may cause frustration due to the challenges, ultimately brings joy in examining phenomena that’s intriguing and, significantly, not adequately described in the vast array of literature dedicated to the way in which organisations operate. The key component of organisations – people – may be idiosyncratic, which defies prediction based on elegant models, but can, if sufficiently motivated, be creative and innovative.

My own PhD research, based on studying quality improvement techniques in twelve UK organisations demonstrated the huge latent potential that undoubtedly exists in every organisation. Participative Action Research, of which I’m an enthusiastic advocate, can play a major role in untapping such potential.

Prof. Dr. Boštjan Gomišček

I passed my viva many years ago, in 1993; however, this does not mean that I have forgotten how it was. I do recall it as it was just yesterday … After my viva, I was part of many Viva exams, of my students at bachelor, masters and PhD level as well as examination & viva committee member of many other students’ theses.

I started my research path as a young researcher at the University of Technology Vienna (Austria), where I obtained my PhD from and at University of Ljubljana (Slovenia). After finishing my PhD, I was working as a Researcher - free-lancer, when I was involved in several national and international interdisciplinary research projects working with research groups from different international universities and research institutions. My research career continued at the Austrian Academy of Science.

In 2003, I was appointed at University of Maribor, Slovenia as an Assistant Professor in the field of Quality Management and Environmental Protection Management, teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. In 2006, I was elected to Associate Professor and in 2014 to Full Professor.

From 2014 to 2021, I was engaged with the University of Wollongong in Dubai, Faculty of Business as an active researcher, with strong engagement in the development and support of the UOWD research platform, the Higher Degree by Research (PhD/DBA) program.

During all my university career time I was engaged in research and/or teaching which is evidenced in my publication record, which contains over 350 items, including journal publications, conference participations, teaching activities and other research and teaching related activities.

I hope I will be able to pass some of my experience to you and help you progressing faster in your PhD journey.

Dr. Ana Faria

Ana has been joining the DoctorateHub at the very early stage back in 2017 and is heading the DoctorateHub office.

Ana holds a PhD from the Engineering and Innovation Department at the Faculty of Mathematics, Computing and Technology, The Open University UK, that has been awarded for her thesis on “The role of behaviour in the transition to more energy efficient use at home”. Her research combined positivist and constructivist paradigms, so to allow for both: statistically analyse the data, whilst also allowing for an exploration of the complex set of variables that influence human behaviour. With this her research used a mixed, multi-method research methodology, using both quantitative and qualitative research procedures. Quantitative research aimed to gain insight and identify issues for the subsequent qualitative phases of the empirical work, while the qualitative research aims to explore attitudes, behaviour and experiences through such methods as interviews or focus groups.

In addition to this Ana received a degree in Economics from the Universidade do Minho (PT), a degree in International Management from the RSM Erasmus University (NL), and a Master in Business Administration in International Industrial Management from the Esslingen University of Applied Science (DE), a MBA program that had been developed to cater the needs of international senior staff from local enterprises such Behr, Bosch, Daimler, Festo, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Kärcher, Porsche or Siemens.

Ana has two decades of work experience as a Project Manager, Business Developer and Management Controller in the field of the Rational Use of Energy, Sustainability, and Smart Cities. Ana has been responsible for the coordination and management of European Funds, or the development of strategic action plans for local municipalities, such as the SEAP (Strategic Action Plan) under the Covenant of Mayors Initiative. As a member of the Finance Group of the European initiative Smart Cities Stakeholder Platform she also improved her experience in the identification, adaptation and implementation of alternative financing models and sustainability models related to smart cities.

Thesis stage: Research planning: Getting ready for data collection

I have just signed up to this hub and it has been insightful. It was quite daunting at first and I’m thinking if do-able. But with me in this platform I can foresee a clearer future. Thanks to the organisers.

I felt way better after the session especially that I got to talk to other PhD candidates that are struggling like me. I felt hope because my advisor never answers so I felt like I could have some guidance here.
