Overview

Many PhD students use qualitative research methodology, either as their core approach to data collection and analysis, or as part of a mixed methods approach. As with any research approach, qualitative research methodology must be conducted and presented in a rigorous and defensible manner. PhD examiners and journal publishers expect qualitative research to demonstrate the use of robust analysis, and clear presentation. There are now several excellent computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software(CAQDAS) packages available to researchers, ensuring that qualitative analysis meets these requirements. NVivo is the most cited and widely used qualitative data analysis software used by researchers.

Contrary to many perceptions, such software rarely does the analysis for the researcher. The primary advantage of using packages such as NVivo is to help the researcher to organise his/her data. This allows the discovery and building of themes and connections, enabling order to be achieved among often complex relationships. In a typical large-scale interview-based study, the ability to organise and interrogate the data becomes increasingly difficult as the volume of data increases. The built-in analytical tools in software like NVivo not only allows the researcher to make sense of large amounts of data, but also facilitates sophisticated analytical approaches to be applied.

The webinar will take place at 1.00pm UK time and we look forward to a lively discussion.

To maximise the learning for participants, questions may be posted to the webinar discussion board after your registration. These will be addressed during the webinar.

Following the presentation of the webinar, the hosts will be available to answer any research-related questions you may have in an open door session with no agenda other than your own questions.

Key Take-Aways

This webinar will assist doctoral students in:

• Becoming broadly familiar with the process of qualitative data analysis using computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software

• Gaining an understanding of the key steps involved in using NVivo for qualitative data analysis

• Acquiring knowledge of the various ways in which qualitative data analysis can be reported in the context of a PhD thesis or journal publication.

Hosts
Prof. Dr. Valerie Lindsay

Valerie Lindsay is a Professor of Management, and Associate Dean for Graduate Programs (SBA) at AUS. She earned her PhD in International Strategy from the University of Warwick in the UK. Dr Lindsay moved to the UAE in 2012, and was appointed as Dean of Business at the University of Wollongong in Dubai. She joined AUS in 2015. Prior to this, she held several academic positons at the University of Auckland and Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand, as well as at the University of Warwick in the UK. Her administrative positions have included several years as Head of Department and as a business school Associate Dean and Dean.

Dr Lindsay's research interests lie in the areas of international strategy, strategic management and entrepreneurship, with a particular focus on SMEs, and business in Asia. More recently, Dr Lindsay has engaged in UAE-based research in areas such as Emiritization and women in leadership. Dr Lindsay specializes in qualitative research methodology, and has had considerable experience using computer-assisted quantitative analysis software, including NVivo and Atlas-ti. Her work has been published in leading journals, including Management International Review, Organizational Dynamics, Industrial Marketing Management, and Journal of World Business.

Before joining academia, Professor Lindsay was a research scientist in immunology and biochemistry, and then moved to the area of business. Among various roles in the latter, she was the New Zealand Marketing Manager for ICI Pharmaceuticals. Thesis stage: Research planning: Getting ready for data collection

I have just signed up to this hub and it has been insightful. It was quite daunting at first and I’m thinking if do-able. But with me in this platform I can foresee a clearer future. Thanks to the organisers.

Thesis stage: Post Doctoral & Publishing

As a postgraduate supervisor, who is already a Ph.D. holder, I was delighted to find a resource that I can continue to develop from. I will continue to share information about DoctorateHub with my students and peers. Thank you.

Thesis stage: Thesis research proposal development

I felt way better after the session especially that I got to talk to other PhD candidates that are struggling like me. I felt hope because my advisor never answers so I felt like I could have some guidance here.
