Overview
The Viva preparation club will assist doctoral students in preparing for their final Viva, as well as discussing possible outcomes and how to address the changes that examinators frequently require. In this club, you will develop a realistic understanding of your work's strengths and weaknesses.

The Viva is an oral examination consisting of a highly critical and stimulating conversation between two examiners and the doctoral candidate. In preparation for your Viva, the Viva preparation club will help you engage in critical reflection and familiarise yourself with how to interpret and respond to critics within an academic discourse. The goal is for you to gain a better understanding of your work's strengths and weaknesses, and to be prepared to discuss both.

After you have completed your Viva, this club will assist you in addressing minor or major changes that you are most likely expected to make in order to obtain the much-desired doctorate degree.

Club Objectives

We will provide training on how to prepare for the Viva in this club. The emphasis will be on providing an environment in which you can:

1. Practice presenting and defending your thesis.

2. Practice how to interpret and respond to critical and probing questions.

3. Realise the do's and don'ts of critical engagement and research presentation.

4. Get the‘make or break’ experience in a safe environment.

5. Practice how to read and interpret the Viva exam report.

6. Practice how to respond to the requested changes.

7. Realise the difference between linear and isolated changes requested and non-linear or overarching ones.
