Overview
The purpose of this club is to help you better understand and practise the various steps involved in developing a doctoral thesis research proposal. Ideally, this will provide you with the knowledge, experience, and skills needed to develop a fully-fledged submission-ready proposal.

The development of a doctoral thesis research proposal is the starting point for your research. It is also a living document that you will carry with you on your doctoral research journey.

The doctoral thesis research proposal is the starting point for some, if not most, programs.

Once applying to a doctoral program, you typically will submit an initial research outline, which subsequently will be developed further into a fully-fledged thesis research proposal.

Upon admission to the doctoral program, the initial focus will then be on compiling an operational thesis proposal for approval by the supervisors or chairs and obtaining ethical clearance for the subsequent research undertaking.

But there's more to it; the doctoral thesis research proposal becomes outdated the moment it's submitted for approval and clearance. This is because you continue to gain knowledge about your research problem and topic throughout the whole journey. As a result, the initial doctoral thesis research proposal should be written in such a way that it can mature and evolve alongside your research and eventually converge into your first doctoral thesis or dissertation draft.

In this club, we seek to advance your understanding and allow you to practice the various steps that a doctoral thesis research proposal would typically go through. Steps include the critical elements of the initial thesis research proposal, the existing knowledge to be incorporated, and how to ensure the thesis research proposal is actionable and frontward compatible, allowing for a subsequent conversion into your first doctoral thesis or dissertation draft.

The objectives of this club are to help you understand and practice the various steps involved in developing a doctoral thesis research proposal. You should achieve the following learning outcomes as a result of this:

  1. Understand how to craft and defend your doctoral thesis research proposal.
  2. Practice the various steps involved in the development of a doctoral thesis research proposal.
  3. Recognize that developing a doctoral thesis research proposal is both the starting point for your research and a living document that will accompany you on your doctoral research journey.
  4. Realise the difference between(i) the initial entry point type doctoral thesis research proposal and(ii) the operational thesis proposal for supervisor approval and ethical clearance for the subsequent research undertaking.
  5. Bare in mind that the doctoral thesis research proposal is out of date the moment it is submitted for approval and clearance.
  6. Discover the proposal conversion process and how it translates to your first thesis draft.
  7. Recognize the critical elements of the initial thesis research proposal, the existing knowledge to be leveraged into it, and how to ensure the thesis research proposal is actionable and frontward compatible so that it can be converted into your first doctoral thesis or dissertation draft.
